Yountville residents can weigh in on uses for school property

The Town is in the planning stages for how it will use the 6.8-acre property to benefit the community.

Town staff have been busy cleaning up the former Yountville Elementary School property and readying it for new uses, the first of which began several weeks ago with the Parks and Recreation Department’s summer kids camp taking place at the site.

A temporary dog park has been approved for the back field, and a fitness center is in the works as well.

However, the town has laid out a detailed timeline of meetings and other opportunities for residents to weigh in on interim uses as well as a long-term plan for what is being called Yountville Commons.

The Town has hired Brendan Kelly of Kelly and Morgan Architects to help facilitate this community engagement process. Kelly will be holding set office hours on Tuesday mornings and the last Saturday of each month, August through November, from 9 a.m. to noon, allowing residents to make half-hour appointments to meet with him and discuss their ideas or concerns. Schedule an appointment here.

The community engagement process starts this Tuesday with a Town Council Study Session on the project from 1 to 3 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers, 6550 Yount St. This informal meeting is open to the public.

Other opportunities to weigh in:

  • Aug. 19, 3-6 p.m. Open House at Commons Hall (formerly the school multipurpose room), 6554 Yount St.
  • Sept. 19, 6 p.m., Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Study Session, Town Hall Council Chambers.
  • October (specific date to be determined), Affordable and Workforce Housing Oversight Committee (Measure S) Study Session, Town Hall Council Chambers.
  • Nov. 12, 5:30 p.m., Zoning and Design Review Board Study Session, Town Hall Council Chambers.

The Town of Yountville bought the 6.8-acre property this spring for $11 million from the Napa Valley Joint Unified School District, which closed the school in 2020 due to falling enrollment numbers.
