V Foundation for Cancer Research to host 26th annual Wine Celebration

“Cancer is democratic, it doesn't matter how much money you have or don’t have, it effects everybody,” said Todd Zapolski, who has been involved in the Wine Celebration committee for more than a decade.

A silent disco, dinner with doctors, and a free, public “Answer for Cancer Symposium” are all part of the V Foundation for Cancer Research’s Wine Celebration fundraiser in Napa Valley.

“Victory over Cancer” is the slogan of the 26th annual Wine Celebration taking place Aug.1-4.

The event draws attendees from across the country for a Napa Valley weekend dedicated to advancing cancer research and saving lives. This year’s Wine Celebration is expected to host more than 1,000 people throughout the four days of events.

“Cancer is democratic, it doesn't matter how much money you have or don’t have, it effects everybody,” said Todd Zapolski, who has been involved in the Wine Celebration committee for more than a decade. “We’ve all been affected by cancer in some way, whether personally, through a family member, or a friend. I can't think of anyone who hasn't been touched by it in some manner.”

Since its inception in 1999, the fundraiser has raised nearly $355 million for cancer research and educational programs.

Tickets to participate in the charitable weekend range from $750 to upwards of $3,000. However, the two-hour "Answer for Cancer Symposium” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 is free and open to all.

“Attendees will learn about the latest advancements in cancer research and how AI has aided science,” Zapolski said. “All you have to do is show up.”

The festivities begin on Thursday, Aug. 1, at “Dinner with the Docs” at two locations – Beringer Vineyards' Hudson House and Hall Winery, both in St. Helena. Guests will have the opportunity to meet leading oncology experts from the V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee while enjoying multi-course meals paired with Napa wines.

The next day on Friday, the “Rock the V” party at Estate Yountville’s Pavilion features a concert and a silent disco, as well as wine and food tastings from top Napa Valley chefs and vintners.

“We are celebrating the lives of survivors and honoring those we've lost to cancer,” Zapolski said in an interview with Highway 29 Media. “This event is a reminder that we are all in this together.”

Following the free Aug. 3 symposium, a Wellness Experience will offer activities focused on the latest cancer research, including cancer awareness and prevention.

That evening, the main event, the Gala Dinner & Auction, will take place at Oakville’s Nickel & Nickel Estate Winery, hosted by Beth Nickel and Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, a board member of the V Foundation.

Some supporters of the V Foundation have faced their own battles with cancer while serving on the board. “They were once fighting for their own lives while supporting the mission to fight for others affected by cancer,” Zapolski said. “Like many good causes, this is one that impacts all of us.”
