Growing up in Napa Valley has been a unique and magical experience, one that is deeply intertwined with the world of hot air balloons. My name is Jared Kimball, and as the President of Napa Valley Aloft, I am immensely proud to be part of an industry that has been providing tourists with unforgettable experiences for decades. Hot air balloons have become synonymous with Napa Valley tourism, and our shared history dates back to the mid-1970s.

From a young age, I was captivated by the sight of vibrant balloons floating gracefully over the vineyards and rolling hills of our picturesque valley. The dawns of my childhood were often marked by the soft hum of propane burners and the mesmerizing sight of balloons ascending into the sky. It was a sight that promised adventure and wonder, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

Napa Valley has always been a community where the extraordinary becomes part of the everyday. Many locals have stories of their own connections to ballooning, whether it was a summer job helping with ground crew duties, chasing balloons as they drifted over the landscape, or simply witnessing the serene beauty of a balloon landing near their home. Ballooning is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a shared experience that weaves through the fabric of our community.

In the mid-1970s, when the first hot air balloons began to dot our skies, Napa Valley was already gaining fame for its wine. But it was the addition of these colorful giants that truly elevated the tourism experience. The synergy between the wineries and the ballooning industry has created a unique allure, drawing visitors from all over the world. The sight of balloons rising at sunrise, casting their shadows over the vineyards, has become as iconic as the taste of our finest Cabernet Sauvignon.

The journey of ballooning in Napa Valley is one of passion and dedication. Many of the pioneers who first took to the skies did so with a spirit of adventure and a love for the land. They understood that ballooning offered a perspective unlike any other, one that could transform an ordinary morning into a lifelong memory. Over the years, this spirit has been passed down, and today, we continue to honor that legacy by providing safe, awe-inspiring flights that showcase the natural beauty of our home.

Being part of the ballooning industry is a source of immense pride for me. Each flight is an opportunity to share the magic of Napa Valley with visitors, to show them the stunning landscape from a vantage point that few get to experience. It’s about creating moments of joy and wonder, about connecting people to the land in a deeply personal way.

Our community’s involvement in ballooning is a testament to the unique lifestyle we enjoy here. Many locals, myself included, have fond memories of early mornings spent preparing for flights, of the camaraderie that comes with working alongside fellow enthusiasts, and of the awe in the eyes of passengers experiencing their first ascent. Ballooning has a way of bringing people together, of fostering a sense of community and shared adventure.

As we look to the future, I am excited to see how ballooning will continue to evolve and contribute to the rich tapestry of Napa Valley tourism. The world may change, but the timeless allure of floating gently above the vineyards will always remain. It is an honor to be a steward of this tradition, to help create moments of magic for those who visit our beautiful valley, and to celebrate the unique lifestyle that growing up around hot air balloons has afforded me.

In Napa Valley, ballooning is more than just an activity, it’s a way of life. It’s a symbol of the spirit of adventure and the beauty of our home.
