At Winemakers Review, we are dedicated to illuminating the stories and practices that shape the world of winemaking, guided by our commitment to shift the narrative back to the people who cultivate, create, and nurture this extraordinary craft. In keeping with this mission, our latest episode delves into the unique terroir and pioneering spirit of a notable region in Napa Valley.
Pritchard Hill, while not officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area, stands as one of Napa Valley's most esteemed locales for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties, known for its rocky soils and demanding agricultural conditions. This episode explores the rich history and individual stories of two families that have been instrumental in developing this distinctive winegrowing area.
Cyril Chappellet, who moved to Pritchard Hill at age ten, has been deeply involved in its transformation into a premier winegrowing region. Having grown up in the vineyards managed by his parents, Molly and Donn Chappellet, Cyril’s early life was steeped in the nuances of viticulture. After an education in farm management and business, and a stint in corporate planning, he returned to take the helm of Chappellet as the managing director and later as chairman of the board, roles that have seen the winery flourish under his leadership. Living on Pritchard Hill with his family, Cyril's life intertwines closely with the land he tends, and his extensive involvement in local wine associations reflects his commitment to both community and industry.
David Long's journey into winemaking began with youthful experiments in fermentation and evolved through a career in the culinary arts before he was drawn to the vineyards of Napa Valley. Inspired by the historic Judgment of Paris and influenced by the legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, David established David Arthur Vineyards on Pritchard Hill. His approach is marked by a blend of hard work, familial warmth, and a passionate belief in the communal joy of sharing wine.
This episode is a celebration of the tireless innovation and dedication of these two families, whose work on Pritchard Hill has not only produced some of the finest wines but has also contributed significantly to the lore and allure of Napa Valley winemaking.
